On 19 June we were joined by partners of the network to launch our new strategy and explore how to achieve our vision:

One day, everyone in the UK will have the chance of decent work in a prosperous economy within a fair and just society, living within the Earth’s limits.

Since our launch in April 2016, UK Stakeholders for Sustainable Development (UKSSD) has transformed itself from an idea to a vibrant network.

Using limited resources, our activities have focused on creating opportunities to bring organisations together, engage the Government and increase our numbers.

Our outcomes currently include:

  • Over 70 partners and 700+ organisations in our extended network of friends (and we’re growing all the time!)
  • 300 organisations attended our Annual Conference 2017 where we ramped up our social media presence by launching a Thunderclap that reached 500,000+ people and got #sustainableUK trending on Twitter
  • Several smaller events including a breakfast briefing with international governments, a roundtable on business engagement with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a webinar on finance for sustainable development – engaging approximately 200 people in total.
  • Coordinated evidence submissions for 2 Parliamentary Enquiries into the UK Governments approach to the Sustainable Development Goals
  • Open Letter from 84 businesses to Theresa May published in The Times, which generated a response from the Prime Minister where she committed to working with organisations to deliver the SDGs in the UK.

Now we are planning for the future. Following survey consultation, discussions with partners, and analysis by the steering group, we have developed a three-year strategy and plan for UKSSD.

Over the coming months we’ll be developing activities with our partners and hope that they are able to take a leading role in making these programmes a reality. These activities are:

  1. Supporting the Government to develop a national plan for the Sustainable Development Goals

  2. Activating organisations to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals

  3. A partnership hub to accelerate sustainable development in the UK

Once developed, we’ll be inviting other organisations and individuals to get involved in the activities that respond to their interests.

We believe we have a unique and important opportunity to drive forward sustainable development in partnership with others and look forward to working with you.
