Shoosmiths and the Sustainable Development Goals

Some of the activities underway that are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals include:

SDG 1

  • Provision of legal advice on a pro bono basis to individuals and organisations unable to afford legal advice – e.g. via pro bono clinics for individuals, brokered programmes such as LawWorks not for Profits Programme and Business in the Community ProHelp;
  • Vulnerable clients and treating customers fairly programmes within our Recoveries Services Group practice group; and
  • 2017/2018 local charity partnerships with charities The Mustard Tree, Nottingham Women’s Centre, The Society of St James, Launchpad.

SDG 3

  • Wellbeing strategy managed by our Diversity, Inclusion and Wellbeing Manager; and
  • 2017/2018 local charity partnerships with health related charities - Ben’s Heroes Trust, St Mary’s Hospice, Alzheimer Scotland, Martin House, Northampton and District Mind.

SDG 4

  • Providing students with access to the corporate environment including work placements, supporting school enterprise days, CV and interview skills advice, sharing academic and career path experiences, literacy coaching.

SDG 5

  • Internal groups include Gender Equality Working Group and LeanIn Networks; and
  • Legal advice provision for equality and inclusion including gender pay gap reporting.

SDG 7 and 13

  • Provision of renewable energy advice to clients.

SDG 8

  • Provision of employment, equality, gender pay gap reporting advice to clients; and
  • Partnering with mentoring charities including Reach Out, Prince’s Trust, Mosaic, The Girls’ Network.

SDG 9

  • Donation of used ICT equipment to Computer Aid International charity since 2008.

SDG 10

  • Founding signatory of Law Society Diversity and Inclusion Charter;
  • Working in partnership with other firms as part of regional Diversity and Inclusion Forums;
  • Time to Change pledge signatory, helping reduce mental health stigma; and
  • Partnership with Aspiring Solicitors.

SDG 11

  • Legal advice provision for e.g. social housing, public transport and infrastructure clients.

SDG 12

  • Legal advice provision for e.g. contaminated land, regeneration, remediation strategies and implementation matters.

SDG 13

  • Founding signatory of Law Society’s Legal Sustainability Alliance; and
  • Provision of renewable energy advice to clients.

SDG 16

  • Legal advice provision on human rights, slavery and human trafficking, anti-corruption matters.
