Our mission is for every home to encourage more sustainable lives. Sustainable Homes provides advice, expertise and knowledge on sustainability and climate change. We have helped multi-tenure landlords and suppliers improve the quality of their homes and environmental performance of their organisations. We work across all tenures with local authorities, central government, housing providers and the supply chain to prevent and adapt to climate change by providing research, consultancy and environmental disclosure.

Sustainable Homes and the Sustainable Development Goals

Sustainable Homes is on the beginning of its journey in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The team has been familiarising themselves to understand the implications of the goals for our business, our clients and partners. We will be campaigning and influencing over 2018 to ensure that the domestic property sector – whatever the tenure – begins to commit to the SDGs. We will be working with organisations in the property sector
and its supporting supply chain to help them integrate the SDGs into their corporate strategies and actions. Over 10 years, Sustainable Homes has been the go to organisation championing sustainability within housing and the supply chain. We believe the SDGs are the next step in this process and through our research and sustainability reporting service, SHIFT, we will be working to ensure the high levels of commitments to the SDGs from our partners. We also intend to support organisational journey on the SDGs through training, webinars and events.

The SDGs that are most relevant to our work include:

  • Affordable and clean energy
  • Industry, innovation and infrastructure
  • Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • Climate action

Our report Safe as Houses, The Review of sustainability in the social housing sector 2016/2017 highlights the main sustainability issues in housing and provides a snapshot of the leaders in the sector – SHIFT accredited landlords – which can be held up as outperforming their peers in terms of sustainability and climate action. This report assesses the sustainability of the social housing sector based on an analysis of social landlords accredited by Sustainable Homes’ SHIFT assessments during 2016. SHIFT landlords remain the leaders not only in the social housing sector, but across all tenures.
