Portsmouth solid at home

Portsmouth, under John Mousinho, came off a stellar League One campaign, amassing 97 points and losing only five matches all season.

The season opener at Elland Road last week was a thrilling six-goal affair between Portsmouth and Leeds United.

Pascal Struijk put Leeds ahead with an early penalty, but Elias Sorenson quickly equalized for Portsmouth. Callum Lang then put Portsmouth ahead before halftime.

Wilfred Gnonto leveled for Leeds, only for Lang to restore Portsmouth’s lead with a late penalty. However, Brendan Aaronson scored in the 95th minute, ending the match in a 3-3 draw.

Luton looking for three points

Luton Town’s return to the Championship was less than ideal, reflecting some struggles from their time in the Premier League.

Amidst speculation about his future, Rob Edwards was re-signed over the summer.

The team lost a few key players during the summer. Ross Barkley has remained in the Premier League, joining Aston Villa for a minimal fee and Gabriel Osho left for French club Auxerre on a free transfer.

Luton’s first match in the Championship was a Monday night fixture at Kenilworth Road against Burnley, where they quickly fell behind by two goals.

Tahith Chong managed to pull one back for Luton, but further goals from Vitinho and Dara O’Shea sealed a disappointing 4-1 defeat.

Portsmouth, in comparison, has shown better form, losing only once in their last six games, including three wins and a draw.

Pompey’s 3-3 draw against Leeds impressed many, with the south coast outfit unlucky not to take all three points.

Last season, Portsmouth excelled at home, dropping only a miserly three points in front of their home fans and will be keen to replicate this form to ensure a decent season for their fans.

Mousinho’s side were also formidable in front of goal, and among the league’s top scorers, averaging 1.7 goals per game and conceding just 19 in 46 matches.

Luton Town will be looking to put that Burnley result behind the, and will need a significant turnaround to overcome Portsmouth at Fratton Park, where recent history favors the home side.

They have won three of the last four league meetings between the two.

Luton’s form has been concerning going back to the Premier League, with only one win in their last ten competitive matches.

History is on their side in this one, winning their most recent league encounter against Portsmouth in 2019 by 3-2.

The Hatters will be happy for a similar result Saturday.
